  • Position Summary

    The Director of Publicity supports the Communications Director by working across 92Y’s programming and social engagement initiatives to ensure constant cadence and compelling messaging focused on the development and dissemination of engaging, informative and innovative content, to a diverse external audience base, including program attendees and patrons, journalists and media influencers.

    Essential Functions

    • Supports the Communications Director in the execution of a comprehensive strategy to refine and communicate key messaging, including 92Y’s programmatic goals along with additional communications activities that promote, enhance, and protect the organization's reputation.
    • Fosters, grows and maintains positive relationships with media contacts, arts and cultural influencers and cross sector thought leaders.
    • Manages media relations for a specific portfolio of 92nd Street Y programs including the development of story ideas and photo opportunities for ongoing programs and one-time events and attend and supervise all media activity related to program portfolio, on- and off-site.
    • Recruit, supervise and performance manage the Media Relations Publicist, and freelancers (as applicable), ensuring that they follow 92nd Street Y standard operating procedures for working with the media, e.g. broadcast agreements, on-site visits, interviews.
    • Collaborate with internal and external constituents to develop and implement appropriate media relations and communications strategies for gaining the highest level of visibility across the media landscape.
    • Prepare and coach 92Y staff members and guest speakers, artists and teachers for media interviews and be present in order to guide or handle any sensitive subject matters. 
    • Develop and maintain multiple media lists and keep abreast of general and niche media outlets and opportunities; develop, maintain and share strong relationships with key media at print, broadcast and digital outlets.
    • Work with outside publicists representing guest speakers and artists to coordinate media coverage of events and programs; obtain/maintain up-to-date information, photography and background materials on artists.

    Education, Skills and Experience

    • Bachelor’s Degree in English, Journalism, Public Relations and/or Communications or related field preferred.
    • Extensive senior level experience in media relations/publicity or communications experience, preferably working for an arts or culture institution, and 5+ years of supervisory experience. 
    • Successful track record in managing and executing communications, media relations, and social media programs to advance an organization's mission and goals. 
    • Demonstrate the stature, gravitas, and confidence to gain credibility with and the respect of NYC’s media influencers as well as internally with the Executive and Senior Leadership teams.
    • Track record of successful story-development and placement, and demonstrated ability to form productive relationships with reporters and producers; strong New York and national culture media contacts a plus.
    • Proven ability to manage people and projects and to work in a collaborative way with both internal and external colleagues.
    • Outstanding writer, strategist and communicator with the ability to create and deliver a compelling narrative that highlights 92Y’s unique position within NYC’s and America’s cultural landscape as well as spotlighting its global reach.
